The edit

The shop is the curator.

“Customers come back because they trust the edit. We want the shop to do the same.”

Considered objects on tabletop with linen and natural light, tabletop styling reference

Hewn began with a frustration. Most boutiques look like inventory displays. The thing we love about a small shop, the curator's hand, the considered edit, the reason a particular wool sweater sits next to a particular ceramic vessel, never makes it to the website.

We started Hewn because we wanted a shop where the curator's hand was visible at first glance. We carry around fifty independent brands at any given time. Every piece in the shop is here because we, the team, can defend why.

What follows is the short version of how we choose.

Material integrity

We carry pieces made by small studios with direct relationships to their mills, tanners, and weavers. Every garment in the shop has a supplier story we can tell you in person.

Slow seasons

We do not chase trends. We carry brands whose silhouettes change slowly and whose materials are built for repair. A piece bought from us this autumn will still be in our shop, in the same form, three autumns from now.

Independent only

Every brand we carry is independently owned and operates at small scale. The owners cut, sew, and finish their own work, or work with mills they know by name.

The store is the curator

We choose every piece by hand. If we cannot defend why something is in the shop, it is not in the shop. The edit is the product.

A note on what we do not carry

If we cannot say where it was made, it is not in the shop.

We do not carry brands without a maker we can name. We do not carry pieces from mills or tanneries we cannot trace. This rules out a lot of work that would otherwise be tempting. It is the rule the shop is built on.

The result is a smaller shop than you might expect from a Queen West storefront. That is the point.

Want to know more?

Come in and ask.

We are happy to walk through the shop and tell you the story behind any piece. Drop in during opening hours, or send us a note and we will arrange a quiet time.
